More Information

This tutorial covers the subject of creating a very accurate selection of a complex subject in a fussy background using the pen tool to create a Path and a transparency.

The file you will download will be zipped together with the original image used by the author and a document file to help you get the best from the video. Here we demonstrate how to make a very accurate selection of a complex subject in a fussy background. The automatic tools of Photoshop such as the magic wand tool does not help very much in these situations. To get around that and make a very accurate selection we use the pen tool to create a Path and then convert that path into a selection. The end result is an object floating on a transparent background and one that can be used in many other images. Although we have used Photoshop CS to record this video tutorial you can follow along using any version of Photoshop that supports adjustment layers.

You can see the image we start with below and the result of our work with the pen tool below that.

The blue squares tell us that our subject is floating on a transparent background.

Take a look at a couple of examples of how the lamp can now be placed within other images, once we have created an effective path and selection.
