More Information

This tutorial covers the technique of creating a great jigsaw puzzle effect.

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements comes equipped with some great texture filters, but did you know there are more of them buried deep in the Adobe program. One of those is a jigsaw puzzle texture that we can apply to our images. The effect can be very eye catching, especially if you remove a few pieces of the jigsaw to give that almost finished appearance.

However, there is one technical issue that we need to be aware and I am afraid it is that dreaded R word......Resolution. When we apply filters and textures to our images the results we get are affected by the resolution of our image. Now this never used to be a problem until camera technology started to give us 6, 8 and 11 million pixel cameras. Now we almost have too much resolution for these types of filters, but this video explains how we can get round that. Our first thought is to remove resolution from our image, but after spending all that money on a quality camera, what is the point of throwing away a large part of our quality. A cunning plan is what we need and the answer is in this video, which runs for 17 minutes.

We use textures, layers, layer styles, quickmask for our selections of the puzzle pieces and much more.

Click the Puzzle piece below to see the final, full resolution image that we created as we recorded this video. Once it opens, right click and save it to your hard drive. Open it up in Photoshop to get the best appreciation of it and view it at print size too.
