This tutorial covers the technique restoring an old
and badly damaged image
One of the
greatest ways to learn Photoshop if you are a newcomer to it is to restore
an old family photograph. Not only is project based learning the best way
to get to grips with Photoshop, but at the end of the restoration you do have
an image that often has a great deal on meaning to the family. The techniques
we employ to repair badly damaged photographs are also those we need to learn
for our more creative work, so we do need to understand the process well.
You
can see our starting image below that is badly creased, faded, scratched and
even has parts of the photograph missing. In repairing this picture we use
the healing brush, clone tool, crop tool and burn tool from the tool box.
We use selections, copy and paste, feather command and layers amongst others.

Not
only can we repair the damage, but we can improve contrast and deal with the
fading so that the end result is probably better than when it was first produced.
We cover all the techniques in our video to show you how you can achieve the
same results.
